benidormAutumn has officially arrived and there has been a noticable cool-off in temperatures since the very high temperature we experienced throughout the summer months.

Below we have some details on other changes that have taken place across Spain this week.

Catalonia Ends Bullfighting

The change in temperature hasn't been the only significant change in Spain this week. The autonomous region of Catalonia ended 624 years of bullfighting tradition in the region when the traditional bullfighting season closed last week. The Catalan decision to discontinue the activity, seen by many as animal cruelty, has been seen by many Spaniards outside of Catalonia as another politically motivated effort by the region to move away from the rest of Spain.

Street Demonstrations Against Home Evictions

There were massed protests this week in 41 cities and towns across Spain about the forceful eviction of people from their homes that cannot keep up mortgage repayments.

Spanish banks are, since 2007, repossessing on average 200 homes per day and have a huge number of repossessions in the system, still to be executed. To make matters worse, the Spanish banks also seek to recover any outstanding debt from those that they evict.

Murcia Airport To Close

Commercial flights from Murcia-San Javier airport are set to end - possibly as early as next year.

Murcia regional government announced on Tuesday that commercial operations will be terminated and the site will only be used as a military air base.

A spokesman claimed the new international airport at Corvera will operate all passenger flights in the Murcia region.

Airlines have to be asked to move their routes to Corvera but, at this stage, it is unclear whether all flights and routes can be moved for technical reasons.

A spokesman for the national department for public works had denied earlier this year that passenger flights from San Javier would be terminated.
